Breaking News: Israel ‘to announce ceasefire’

The Israeli cabinet is set to back an end to offensive military activities in the Gaza Strip, three weeks after attacks began, the BBC understands. Israel’s leaders are expected to approve a ceasefire at a meeting later on Saturday, after which PM Ehud Olmert will address the nation, sources said. The sources said the ceasefire deal did not involve Hamas. It is not clear how Hamas will respond; its officials say the group will ignore any truce unless its demands are met. Ahead of the move violence continued in Gaza, with 50 Israeli air strikes overnight. Rocket fire from Hamas militants also continued. About 1,200 Palestinians have been killed since the violence began on 27 December. Thirteen Israelis – three civilians and 10 soldiers – have been killed during the campaign.

As usual, the Israelis are choosing their own timing to pull out, and their own terms. No one who could force them to stop this did, so why not choose their time and place? They may be out in a day or two, but we must go on, and intensify our work against the murders and war criminals. Let us not rest, use the fact that Israel is the most hated regime anywhere now, and act to end the nightmare of Zionism NOW!

Israel then claimed that the tunnels were being used to bring in weapons. There was a simple solution to that, wasn’t there? End the blockade. Gaza doctors detail burns to entire victims’ bodies from chemical that is forbidden to be used as a weapon Video showing injuries consistent with the use of white phosphorus shells has been filmed inside hospitals treating Palestinian wounded in Gaza City. Contact with the shell remnants causes severe burns, sometimes burning the skin to the bone, consistent with descriptions by Ahmed Almi, an Egyptian doctor at the al-Nasser hospital in Khan Younis. Almi said the entire body of one victim was burned within an hour. It was the first time he had seen the effects of what he called a “chemical weapon”. The Israeli military has denied using white phosphorus during the assault on Gaza, but aid agencies say they have no doubt it has been used.

Israel’s Message: London Review of Books

Ilan Pappe In 2004, the Israeli army began building a dummy Arab city in the Negev desert. It’s the size of a real city, with streets (all of them given names), mosques, public buildings and cars. Built at a cost of $45 million, this phantom city became a dummy Gaza in the winter of 2006, after Hizbullah fought Israel to a draw in the north, so that the IDF could prepare to fight a ‘better war’ against Hamas in the south. When the Israeli Chief of General Staff Dan Halutz visited the site after the Lebanon war, he told the press that soldiers ‘were preparing for the scenario that will unfold in the dense neighbourhood of Gaza City’. A week into the bombardment of Gaza, Ehud Barak attended a rehearsal for the ground war. Foreign television crews filmed him as he watched ground troops conquer the dummy city, storming the empty houses and no doubt killing the ‘terrorists’ hiding in them.

Jewish British Lawmaker Likens Israel to Nazis: YouTube

SIR Gerald Kaufman, yesterday (Thu 15 Jan 2009) compared the actions of Israeli troops in Gaza to the Nazis who forced his family to flee Poland. Kaufman, a member of the Jewish Labour movement linked to Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s ruling party, also called for an arms embargo against Israel. Sir Gerald, who was brought up as an orthodox Jew and Zionist, said: “My grandmother was ill in bed when the Nazis came to her home town a German soldier shot her dead in her bed. “My grandmother did not die to provide cover for Israeli soldiers murdering Palestinian grandmothers in Gaza. The present Israeli government ruthlessly and cynically exploits the continuing guilt from gentiles over the slaughter of Jews in the Holocaust as justification for their murder of Palestinians.” He said the claim that many of the Palestinian victims were militants “was the reply of the Nazi” and added: “I suppose the Jews fighting for their lives in the Warsaw ghetto could have been dismissed as militants.” He accused the Israeli government of seeking “conquest” and added: ” They are not simply war criminals, they are fools.”

Open letter to Israeli Soldiers: A petition

Jews call on Israeli soldiers to stop war crimes We Jews in the international community call upon Israeli soldiers to raise the Black Flag of Illegality over the operations against the people of Gaza. We refuse to remain silent while Israeli leaders force Israeli soldiers to commit war crimes: crimes against humanity for which they will one day be called to account. Gaza: Not a War of Self-Defense : Jurist

JURIST Guest Columnist Victor Kattan of the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, says that Israel’s Gaza offensive cannot be legally justified by any right of self-defense and instead constitutes aggression and a forcible deprivation of the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination… The images speak for themselves. For two weeks the scenes of carnage, mutilated body parts, and dead children have haunted our television screens and appeared in pictures in newspapers and on the internet. Israel has used all the sophisticated military paraphernalia at its disposal to destroy Hamas. And Hamas has in turn continued to fire rockets into Israel. Since Israel launched its offensive in Gaza on 27 December 2008, 1,010 Palestinians and thirteen Israelis have been killed. Of the Israeli dead 10 have been soldiers and three are civilians. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, one third of the dead are children. Almost 5,000 Palestinians have been injured. We do not know the exact proportion of Hamas fighters amongst the figures for Palestinian dead. Israel is not allowing any foreign journalists to enter the Strip to independently verify the facts.

The Lancet: Letter to the Editors by Colin Green

Dear Sir, On Friday, 16th January, a convoy organized by the Israeli humanitarian organization Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHR-I) is leaving Tel Aviv and Taybeh for Gaza to express solidarity with the Palestinians and attempt to bring in food and medical supplies. In contrast to the stunning and shameful silence of the Israeli Medical Association, the World Medical Association, indeed of all of us involved in the healthcare professions complicit in war crimes by our silence, these Israelis are calling for a cessation of deliberate targeting of innocent civilians, of all attacks on medical teams and ambulances, of prevention of medical care for the wounded and a demand that the Israeli military invaders stop shooting at aid convoys. For anybody still doubtful about the media reports reaching the outside world, I can only pass on the information I get by twice daily telephone calls from respected medical and surgical colleagues, most of them Europeans or UN staff, working inside Gaza. They emphasise that far from avoiding civilian casualties, or damaging hospital and medical facilities, these are deliberately targeted by the Israeli air and ground forces. The most dangerous vehicle to be in is an ambulance. One European surgeon states that out of hundreds of terrible injuries he has already treated, only one was identifiable as a Hamas fighter, the rest were innocent women, children and elderly civilians. Severe burns, external (mostly chemical) and internal, massive haemorrhage and multiple limb amputations are commonplace. The spectrum of injuries they are seeing in the hospitals and morgues, as well as unconfirmed (in the absence of accredited foreign correspondents) reports on the ground, indicate use of the full range of antipersonnel ordnance in the Israeli armamentarium. These include depleted uranium tipped shells, white phosphorous shells, cluster bombs, dense inert metal explosives (DIMES), Markeva tank shells which fling out at high velocity either thousands of darts (flechettes) or small exploding CD’s (kalinits and rakefets,) as well as high explosives which, far from restricting damage to a pinpointed small area, cause widespread destruction. It is therefore absolutely no surprise that the deaths (1013) and casualties (4230), equivalent if the UK was similarly invaded to some 40,000 deaths and near 200,000 civilians severely burned or maimed for life in just two weeks of carnage, is so devastating to a besieged, helpless population. Claims that Hamas guerillas are heavily armed are nonsense. Their home-made fireworks are pathetic, witness the 20 Israeli deaths caused by them over the last 10 years in comparison with the slaughter in Gaza over the recent fortnight. With the PHR-I, I condemn the rockets too, not only because they are militarily futile and kill innocent Israeli citizens, but because they provide just the propaganda pretext for this long-planned attack on Gaza. Medical clinics in Gaza are struggling to treat an overwhelming number of casualties following Israel’s 3-week assault on the isolated enclave. Jan McGirk reports from Jerusalem.

Inside Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital: The Lancet

Norwegian doctors Mads Gilbert and Erik Fosse, who have worked on and off in Gaza for over 20 years, report on the unfolding crisis and conditions inside the Al-Shifa hospital, Gaza City. On the morning of Jan 10, light and heavy machine-gun fi re is getting closer to Al-Shifa hospital, after a night of intense bombardment, much heavier than previous nights. We pack our limited luggage. On Jan 8, we also had to pack to participate in a 16-ambulance convoy to Egypt to evacuate war casualties for much needed follow-up treatment. This convoy to the Rafah border was coordinated with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who further coordinated with the Israeli Defence Forces. We accompanied one patient each together with a Palestinian nurse. Both patients had undergone lifesaving surgery at Al-Shifa hospital and were now intubated intensivecare-unit cases. One was a 15-year-old boy with severe maxillo-orbital blast with exploded eyeballs, both of which needed removal. He spoke as he was admitted 2 days earlier and should have a fair chance of survival. The second was a man with thoracoabdominal injuries (liver and intestinal ruptures). They were marginally stable, and the remaining 14 ambulances also had serious war injuries needing hospital treatment abroad.

Qatar, Mauritania cut Israel ties: Al Jazeera News

Qatar and Mauritania have suspended economic and political ties with Israel in protest against the war in Gaza, Al Jazeera has learned. The move announced on Friday followed calls by Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, and Khaled Meshaal, the exiled leader of Hamas, for all Arab nations to cut ties with Israel. Addressing leaders at an emergency Arab summit in Doha, the Qatari capital, al-Assad declared that the Arab initiative for peace with Israel was now “dead”. He said Arab countries should cut “all direct and indirect” ties with Israel in protest against its offensive in Gaza. Egypt and Jordan are the only Arab countries to have signed peace treaties with Israel and have Israeli embassies.

Like Venezuela and Bolivia, Qatar sits on some of the world’s largest reserves of hydrocarbons. Turkey, in this same article, has escalated its condemnation to unprecedented levels, calling for suspending Israel’s membership in the UN for ignoring the UNSC ceasefire resolution, after its prime minister had already accused Israel of committing “crimes against humanity.” Turkey, of course, has been — was? — for decades Israel’s closest ally in the region. Israel poised for ceasefire vote: BBC

Israeli ministers are due to vote on a unilateral ceasefire proposal, amid signs of diplomatic movement on the three-week conflict in Gaza. Government spokesman Mark Regev said he thought Israel may have achieved enough to allow a ceasefire. Israel and the US signed a deal to halt the smuggling of arms into Gaza as Cairo continued its mediation efforts. Israeli warplanes bombed Gaza again just before dawn, with heavy explosions south of Gaza City.

This week the death toll in Gaza passed the 1,000 mark, after three weeks of Israeli air and ground attacks. But surprisingly, no one has reported an even more appalling statistic: that there are some 1.5 million injured Palestinians in Gaza. How is is possible that such an astounding figure could have passed the world’s media by? The reason apparently is that they have been relying on the highly unreliable statistics provided by official Palestinian sources. It appears that the Palestinian health ministry only records as wounded those Gazans who need to stay in hospital because of the severity of their injuries.

al-haq Nowhere Left to Hide in the Gaza Strip: Al Haq report

Even Hospitals and UN Humanitarian Facilities under Israeli Attack At approximately 10:00 pm on Wednesday, 14 January 2009, artillery shells began landing in close proximity to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) compound as Israeli military forces shelled targets in Gaza City. The facility is the main UNRWA storage warehouse in the Gaza Strip for humanitarian goods desperately needed by the tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians. Last week, this compound had been officially declared as one of the 41 UNRWA locations throughout the Gaza Strip sheltering some 38,000 fleeing civilians. Israeli military authorities were notified by UNRWA of the compound’s location and the intention to use it as a shelter for displaced persons. Following Wednesday night’s shelling, UNRWA did not deem it necessary to evacuate the civilians from the compound based on assurances by the Israeli military forces.

A letter from 21 Israeli academics against the war! The leaders of the western world are wringing their hands in despair at the sight of the horrors inflicted on Gaza (Gaza crisis, 16 January). The UN general secretary, the French president and others are holding intensive discussions with some of the leaders of the Middle East in an attempt to put an end to the carnage in Gaza. Word, words, words. Meanwhile, hundreds of Palestinian civilians get killed, thousands are bleeding to death, tens of thousands are uprooted and wandering in vain in search of some shelter to protect them. The Israeli army bombs hospitals and Unrwa relief centres, and, defying international convention, it uses white phosphorus bombs against civilians. “What else can we do?” these leaders keep asking. Well, here is what you can do: move from words to deeds. Only immediate, decisive and strict sanctions against the state of Israel and its limitless aggression will make it realise that there’s a limit. We, as Israeli citizens, raise our voices to call on EU leaders: use sanctions against Israel’s brutal policies and join the active protests of Bolivia and Venezuela. Farmers claim UK, Jordan boycotting Israeli fruit: Ynet News

Fruit growers disappointed by canceled orders from abroad, leaving produce to rot in warehouses: Ynet News Fruit growers in Israel have reported delays and reductions in orders from abroad since the military operation in Gaza was launched, due to various boycotts against Israeli produce. Farmers say much of their produce is being held in warehouses due to canceled orders, and fear a sharp decrease in fruit exports to countries such as Jordan, Britain, and the Scandinavian countries. “We export persimmons, and because of the fighting a number of countries and distributors are canceling orders,” Giora Almagor, of the southern town of Bitzaron, told Ynet. He said some of the produce had already been shipped while some was awaiting shipment in warehouses.

This may give the Israelis some idea what Gaza has suffered from by their illegal blockade, which aslo stopped Gaza agricultural products from being exported for almost three years!

Growing outrage at the killings in Gaza: Guardian Letters

The massacres in Gaza are the latest phase of a war that Israel has been waging against the people of Palestine for more than 60 years. The goal of this war has never changed: to use overwhelming military power to eradicate the Palestinians as a political force, one capable of resisting Israel’s ongoing appropriation of their land and resources. Israel’s war against the Palestinians has turned Gaza and the West Bank into a pair of gigantic political prisons. There is nothing symmetrical about this war in terms of principles, tactics or consequences. Israel is responsible for launching and intensifying it, and for ending the most recent lull in hostilities. Israel must lose. It is not enough to call for another ceasefire, or more humanitarian assistance. It is not enough to urge the renewal of dialogue and to acknowledge the concerns and suffering of both sides. If we believe in the principle of democratic self-determination, if we affirm the right to resist military aggression and colonial occupation, then we are obliged to take sides… against Israel, and with the people of Gaza and the West Bank. We must do what we can to stop Israel from winning its war. Israel must accept that its security depends on justice and peaceful coexistence with its neighbours, and not upon the criminal use of force. We believe Israel should immediately and unconditionally end its assault on Gaza, end the occupation of the West Bank, and abandon all claims to possess or control territory beyond its 1967 borders. We call on the British government and the British people to take all feasible steps to oblige Israel to comply with these demands, starting with a programme of boycott, divestment and sanctions.

he Crisis in Gaza: An Interview with Gilbert Achcar: Irish Left Review

Gilbert Achcar lived in Lebanon for many years. He is now Professor at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. He is the author of many books analysing politics and society in the Middle East from a Left perspective, including The Clash of Barbarisms, Eastern Cauldron, The 33-Day War and Perilous Power (a collection of dialogues between Achcar and Noam Chomsky). He spoke to Daniel Finn for Irish Left Review about the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip and its likely consequences. The interview was conducted on the 10th of January 2009. Daniel Finn: What do you think are the chief goals of Israeli strategy at present in their assault on the Gaza strip? Gilbert Achcar: Well that’s a complicated question actually, because there are different levels involved. Seen through a wide angle, it is part of an ongoing struggle between Israel on the one hand and both Hamas and Hezbollah on the other, a struggle which reached a previous peak in 2006, when during the summer Israel was simultaneously waging a war against Gaza and another one, a major onslaught, on Lebanon. That was related to the global strategy of the Bush administration in its confrontation with Iran, with the conception prevailing in Washington that Hamas and Hezbollah are tools of the Iranian state and therefore part of an alliance of forces that should be smashed if ever US hegemony in the region as well as Israeli security is to be stabilized. It is therefore a further stage in the same ongoing war that has been unfolding for the last few years.

Breaking News!: The Grand Hotel Intercontinental cancels the Israeli Tourism Fair

Confronted with the indignation expressed by so many people in France and abroad who had heard about the scheduled Israeli Tourism Fair in this great Parisian hotel, the management of this establishment has made the decision to cancel this event, which was supposed to open on January 15. The hotel’s management, as the Paris police prefecture has confirmed to us, has indicated that it has disinvited the 50 Israeli exhibitors who had planned to present their tourism products. We express our profound appreciation for all the individuals and associations in France and abroad that made the effort to express their arguments to the hotel management, arguments that were certainly taken into account in the decision to cancel the event. We also thank the management of the hotel for this decision, and we stress that commercial relations and all other interactions should be guided by basic ethical rules. As long as Israel makes martyrs of an entire people in order to annex their lands, defying all international conventions as well as the most fundamental human rights, we must avoid any acts that would turn us into accomplices. Holding an Israeli tourism fare would have been especially obscene while the Israeli army continues its massacres in the Gaza Strip. But it is the web of relations and collaboration with Israel which we have the moral duty to freeze, as long as there is a continuation of the occupation and enslavement of a whole people, deprived of liberty for more than 60 years. Together, we have not only the duty but also the power to reject the impunity enjoyed for so long by Israeli state terrorism.
