EU must hold Israel to its agreements: Open letter to the EU in The Guardian

Despite the EU’s call for a ceasefire, the brutal Israeli bombing of Gaza continues (Reports, 3 January). Nonetheless, the EU is preparing to upgrade its existing agreement to give Israel even more privileged access to European institutions. In December, the council of ministers voted to support this upgrade, ignoring the fact that Israel was in breach of an “essential element” of the earlier agreement. This required states to respect “human rights and democratic principles, which guides their internal and international policy and constitutes an essential element of this agreement”. The proposed upgrade is even weaker and includes no obligations on Israel in respect of its illegal settlements, the illegal wall, and its repeated breaches of international human rights and international humanitarian law. In view of the horrific events of the past days, we call on: 1) The UK government to revoke its support for any new agreements with Israel and for this to be communicated forthwith to the Czech presidency of the EU in advance of its meeting with the commission, and to the EU council of ministers 2) The European parliament to refuse to endorse any extension of existing agreements and to use its influence to prevent any upgrades of EU benefits to Israel until it abides by its international legal and humanitarian obligations.

In Gaza, the real enemy is Iran; Israeli attacks must not stop until Iran’s proxy, Hamas, is defeated.

READ THE LIES!

By Yossi Klein Halevi and Michael B. Oren Reporting from Jerusalem — The images from the fighting in Gaza are harrowing but ultimately deceptive. They portray a mighty invading army, one equipped with F-16 jets that have bombed a civilian population defended by a few thousand fighters armed with primitive rockets. But widen the lens and the true nature of this conflict emerges. Hamas, like Hezbollah in Lebanon, is a proxy for the real enemy Israel is confronting: Iran. And Israel’s current operation against Hamas represents a unique chance to deal a strategic blow to Iranian expansionism.

In an article combining lies, schreck propaganda and disgusting war-mongering, one can see the typical Zionist line: blame the victim, obfuscate, lie and lie again, and reverse any situation you are discussing on its head. It works, unfortunately, if you do it for long enough.

Israel’s righteous fury and its victims in Gaza: Electronic Intifada

Ilan Pappe

My visit back home to the Galilee coincided with the genocidal Israeli attack on Gaza. The state, through its media and with the help of its academia, broadcasted one unanimous voice — even louder than the one heard during the criminal attack against Lebanon in the summer of 2006. Israel is engulfed once more with righteous fury that translates into destructive policies in the Gaza Strip. This appalling self-justification for the inhumanity and impunity is not just annoying, it is a subject worth dwelling on, if one wants to understand the international immunity for the massacre that rages on in Gaza. It is based first and foremost on sheer lies transmitted with a newspeak reminiscent of darker days in 1930s Europe. Every half an hour a news bulletin on the radio and television describes the victims of Gaza as terrorists and Israel’s massive killings of them as an act of self-defense. Israel presents itself to its own people as the righteous victim that defends itself against a great evil. The academic world is recruited to explain how demonic and monstrous is the Palestinian struggle, if it is led by Hamas. These are the same scholars who demonized the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in an earlier era and delegitimized his Fatah movement during the second Palestinian intifada.

Despite It’s Military Might, Israel is a Weak and Dying State: The Self-Defense of Suicide

By OREN BEN-DOR, COUNTERPUNCH

“THE RADIO REPORTED THAT MY FRIEND WAS UNDER THE RUBBLE”

By Dr. Haider Eid, Live from Palestine, 31 December 2008

I was lying in my bedroom when the first strike happened, around 1:30 in the morning. A strike isn’t just one

explosion, it’s a series of explosions. Boom, boom, boom, boom. The whole building shook. I woke up and went to the

bathroom first, and within 30 seconds the second strike hit. F-16s were bombing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs

building, about 500 meters away. I could hear glass shattering everywhere. Dr. Haider Eid reports from the besieged Gaza Strip.

Israel claims success in the PR war

From The Jewish Chronicle, by Anshel Pfeffer A most revealing article on Israel’s PR success, so far, in its war of aggression on Gaza. Note how preparations had started months earlier, refuting all current Israeli claims that their war was in “retaliation” to whatever the Palestinians have done a couple of days earlier.
